There are a few reasons why candidates might not like talking about compensation during an interview.

  • It can be awkward. Bringing up the topic of money can make some people feel uncomfortable, especially if they’re not sure what to expect. They may worry about appearing greedy or materialistic.
  • It can be seen as taboo. In some cultures, it’s considered rude to talk about money in public. This could be especially true in countries where there is a large income disparity.
  • They may not know their worth. Some candidates may not be sure what their skills and experience are worth in the market. They may be afraid to ask for too much money, or they may be afraid of being lowballed.
  • They may be worried about being rejected. If a candidate asks for a salary that’s too high, they may worry that the employer will reject them outright. This is especially true if the candidate is interviewing for a job that they really want.

There are also some religions that discourage talking about money. For example, in the Buddhist tradition, it’s considered important to detach oneself from material possessions. This could make it difficult for a Buddhist candidate to talk about compensation during an interview.

Here are some tips for candidates who want to talk about compensation during an interview:

  • Do your research. Before the interview, research the average salary range for the position you’re applying for. This will give you a better idea of what to expect.
  • Be prepared to negotiate. It’s unlikely that you’ll get the exact salary you want right off the bat. Be prepared to negotiate and compromise.
  • Focus on the value you bring. When you’re talking about compensation, focus on the value you bring to the company. Explain how your skills and experience will help the company succeed.
  • Be confident. It’s important to be confident when you’re talking about compensation. Don’t be afraid to ask for what you’re worth.

If you’re still uncomfortable talking about compensation during an interview, you can always ask the interviewer to discuss it after the interview. This will give you a chance to think about your salary expectations and to do some research.
